About Us

In the fall of 2004, Paule Hjertaas initiated a campaign for reducing children's exposure to pesticides to ask Minister Forbes to introduce steps to protect children from pesticides in Saskatchewan Environment's Strategy for a Green and Prosperous Economy. Over one thousand
people signed petitions or wrote letters of support, and many organizations of all kinds also supported the campaign with letters and resolutions.

Just as groups formed a non-smoking coalition, a coalition is needed to advocate pesticide reduction. The Saskatchewan Network for Alternatives to Pesticides Inc., SNAP, has been incorporated in Saskatchewan as a non-profit corporation to meet this need and provide continuity to the campaign.

SNAP's mission is to work towards environmental sustainability in Saskatchewan by
promoting better understanding of the impact of pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc) on health and environment, greater awareness and availability of alternatives for controlling pests, diseases and weeds, and significant reductions in pesticide use.

Our Objectives

- To reduce the use of pesticides in Saskatchewan.

- To increase the availability of alternative pest control products and methods in Saskatchewan.

- To connect and support those interested in alternatives to pesticides.

We pursue these goals through:

Education

- Build awareness among the general population of health and environmental impacts of pesticide use.

- Encourage and foster local discussion about pesticide use and alternatives.

- Select, develop or adapt and deliver informational and educational programs about alternatives to pesticides.

- Practical demonstration projects.

Networking

- Build a strong coalition of those interested in alternatives to pesticides.

- Serve as an information clearing-house for activities related to alternatives to pesticides.

- Build and maintain contacts with similar organizations throughout North America and abroad to share ideas, information and updates.

Research

- Identify needs and encourage research on natural solutions to pest and weed control and management.

- Carry out other incidental activities related to these objectives.
