Sustainable Agriculture Strategy Consultation share your feedback online until March 31, 2023 Government of Canada consultation
The Western Producer article ‘Sustainable agriculture strategy needs farm input’ is praising the mention of gmos, and very critical of cover crops, planting trees and converting crops to pasture as well as shedding doubt on the concept of sustainability. Business as usual for the Western Producer.
Considering that gmo crops are mostly developed for herbicide-resistance or include the natural insecticide Bt for pest control, gmo use has been found to seriously increase pesticide use. As single herbicide-resistance genes (to glyphosate) have proven not to be enough, crops are now developed to be resistant to several herbicides as well, including dicamba and 2,4-D which leads to increased use. This point of view is not reflected in the Western Producer which supports gmo crops.
As COP15 Canada promised to halve pesticides, this seems headed the wrong way.
