SaskOrganics Fall & Winter Farm Club Meeting-South #1 to be taken place at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre in two weeks.

'Our Organic Research Program will be presenting an update on several ongoing and new projects on organic, low-input and regenerative practices,.

Topics will include: Cover Cropping and their impact on the following cash crop, Living Mulch, Intercropping, Biocontrol of legume and wheat diseases, Biological amendments, Growth of Durum vs. Common Wheat cultivars, and Participatory Plant Breeding.

 After the research program update, the remainder of the meeting will be designated to producer sharing and networking. Any producer interested in organic and low-input agriculture is welcome!

National Forum To Convene on Pesticide Threat and Holistic Solutions Aligned with Nature

(Beyond Pesticides, October 9, 2025) The 42nd National Forum Series, The Pesticide Threat to Environmental Health: Advancing Holistic Solutions Aligned with Nature—scheduled to begin on October 29, 2025, 1:00-3:30pm (Eastern time, US), will focus on aligning land management with nature in response to current chemical-intensive practices that pose a threat to health (see Pesticide-Induced Diseases Database), biodiversity, and climate. On Wednesday, September 17, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time / 11:00 AM Pacific Time, we will be discussing the findings of Ecojustice’s report on Canada’s pesticide crisis and the implications of pesticides and PFAS (forever chemicals) regulations in the country. We are also joined by Sébastien Sauvé, Associate Professor - Environmental Chemistry, Université de Montréal, who will be presenting his research on testing water from taps and water fountains in public spaces like parks, restaurants and community centres for PFAS.

In the spring of 2021, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) released their final decisions on the re-evaluation of the most widely used insecticides in Canada, the neonicotinoids– compounds that are banned in the European Union. The PMRA surprised the scientific community by reversing their own earlier (2016) proposed decision to ban all outdoor uses of neonicotinoid products due to “unacceptable risk to aquatic organisms.” This recent controversial decision, which was an apparent flip-flop, represents a familiar scenario for pesticide registration in North America. Here I highlight how this protracted regulatory process for neonicotinoids is an example of a familiar industry-led effort to bend the science, by targeting scientists and demanding an increased burden of proof. This presentation represents a call to action to increase the speed of regulatory decisions for pesticides, remove industry influence in the regulatory process, and communicate the decision-making process more transparently to improve public trust.
