Fire fighting-foam
Why add this page here. Persistent PFAs have been used in fire fighting-foam. They, as well as other unsustainable toxins currently in use, should be replaced by less toxic products. This one is produced by genetic engineeering. The bacterium Pseudomonas Putida is a saprophytic soil bacterium often used in research, bioremediation, and synthesis of chemicals and other compounds. (Wikiipedia). It is presumably inocuous. I am unsure if the rhamnolipids are extracted before spraying, or wethrer the bacteeria are sprayed too.
Project Ashbloom- working on a non-toxic biodegradable fire fighting foam The University of Alberta iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine) team earned a Gold Medal at this year’s Grand Jamboree conference in Paris, France which was held from October 28th to 31st. This year’s team tackled the global, and decidedly local, problem of wildfires by looking to improve on current, industrially produced firefighting foams through the production of a naturally occurring class of surfactants called Rhamnolipids from an engineered strain of Pseudomonas Putida. The project, named Ashbloom (team promotional video) not only encompassed the genetic modification of P. putida by Ashbloom’s wet lab team, but also examined and optimized metabolic modeling to maximize rhamnolipid production during bacterial growth through the efforts of the dry lab team.
